Engineer (Atmospheric Studies and Site Testing): Núcleo Milenio TITANS, Universidad de Concepcion
The Department of Astronomy of the University of Concepcion (UdeC) seeks to hire an Engineer to work with the TITANs team (www.titans.cl). The position is funded for two to three years. We offer an initial trial period of 6 months, followed by annual renewals depending on performance.
The engineer will work to enhance the capabilities of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT; https://eventhorizontelescope.org/) and next-generation EHT (ngEHT; https://www.ngeht.org/) and at the same time enable broader studies in atmospheric science.
While the available position is full-time (44 hours per week), we are open to a partial time dedications depending on the candidate. TITANs actively seeks to balance its gender and other minority presence. Applicants requiring part time employment to share time with caring responsibilities are also encouraged, and flexible working hours are open to discussion. The engineer will work at the CePIA laboratory, Astronomy Department, UdeC, in collaboration with Professors Rodrigo Reeves and Neil Nagar.
Specific tasks include:
- design, validation, installation, and operation of site-testing stations at multiple locations in Chile and Antarctica: each with IR-based water vapor monitors, weather station, solar power and communications.
- inter-calibration of atmospheric water vapor monitors on the ground with satellite-based atmospheric reanalysis databases
- bandwidth tests of LEO satellite communications between Antarctica and Chile using both data tests with satellite terminals, and simulations.
- supervision of students working on related projects.
- support towards installation of new EHT antennas in Chile.
Minimum requisites to apply for the position are:
- either a Masters in electronics or telecommunications engineering or fields highly related to the listed tasks, or a professional (‘Titulo’) engineer with practical experience in the listed tasks.

- intermediate to advanced programming experience
Additionally, the following factors would be a significant advantage:
- intermediate to advanced english skills
- intermediate to advanced programming skills in Python
- previous experience in areas related to radio and/or infrared wavelengths, atmospheric studies, and satellite communication.
- ability to work at altitudes up to 5200 meters.
The salary is negotiable depending on experience, within the range of 700.000 to 1.200.000 per month (for a full time dedication) depending on qualifications and relevant experience.
